What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos: Tips for Adventurous and Creative Couples
March 21, 2024

Your engagement photo outfits say a lot about your love story, so it's worth thinking them through. As a Los Angeles engagement photographer, I've seen how the right wardrobe choice can elevate a session from good to extraordinary. Here's what I tell every couple before we shoot.
Lead With Authenticity
The most important thing is choosing outfits that feel like you. Avoid borrowing someone else's aesthetic just because it looks good on Instagram. When you feel comfortable and confident in what you're wearing, that ease shows in every frame.
Bring 2–3 options so we can shift the mood across the session, something relaxed, something a little more polished, and maybe something in between.
Coordinate, Don't Match
Identical outfits read as costume-y on camera. Instead, build around 2–3 complementary colors and let your textures and silhouettes do the work. Think of it like a color palette rather than a uniform.
Match Your Location
- Nature / outdoors: earthy tones, flowing fabrics, layers
- Urban / city: structured, contemporary pieces with clean lines
- Beach: lightweight materials in soft, neutral hues
- Adventure / hiking: breathable, layered clothing that moves with you
Don't Overlook the Details
Jewelry, footwear, and accessories matter more than people think. Keep patterns simple, busy prints compete with your faces. Choose shoes you can actually walk in; we often cover a lot of ground.
Color Psychology
Earthy tones and pastels photograph well across varying skin tones and lighting conditions. Avoid neons, which can cast unflattering color onto skin in certain light.
Hair, Makeup, and Comfort
Professional grooming makes a real difference. But more importantly, test your outfits before the day. Sit down, stretch, walk around. If something pulls, bunches, or restricts movement, it'll read on camera.
Practical Prep
- Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly
- Pack a backup outfit in case plans change
- Bring essentials: touch-up kit, a mirror, a lint roller
- Confirm how many outfit changes are included in your package
The couples who feel most at ease on their session days are almost always the ones who put thought into their wardrobe in advance. When you're not worrying about how you look, you're free to just be together, and that's exactly when the best photos happen.
